Removals jargon explained

This is to help you to understand the terms used when speaking to other removal companies.

“Consignment” – Customers goods.

“Part-load” - This is where a removal company will transport a selection of items from and to a destination only when a vehicle is in the appropriate area due to an existing booking. Transport timings are based around the main job paying for the trip and therefore the transport timings are of the removal companies choosing, which can’t be declined by the customer.

“Groupage” – This is where a removal company will collect your goods and place into store until such times that they have sufficient quantity and number of customers to fill the removal vehicle up. Only once the removal vehicle is full, will the trip commence and delivery arranged based on logistical and geographical location. Delivery dates are at the removal companies choosing and dates can’t be declined by the customer.

“Dedicated trip basis” – This is where the removal vehicle will only have one consignment on it dedicated to that customer and that customer only. Timings are of the customers choosing subject to the perimeters of the quote, commercial transport law and availability.

“Tipping” – This is a saying which comes from our haulage cousins which means off-loading. Once you have off-loaded it is known as “Tipped.”

“Residue” - This is the term used for items requiring additional vehicle/storage space.

“Ex” - simply means “from” for example Ex Store means From Store.

“Transhipment” also known as “Tranship” – this is the practice of using a small alternative vehicle to “ferry” your belongings from the removal vehicle and your premises or vice versa. This method maybe applied to complete a removal to overcome access issues such as a low bridge, weight restricted locations, isolated locations and poor parking conditions.

'Operating Centre' - This is the Authorised location where we are allowed by VOSA to keep our vehicles.
