Swindon’s name is derived from the Saxon words “swine”, which means pig, and “dun” which means hill. This was an appropriate description of the location and primary live stock found in the area. In the 11th Century Swindon was listed as a village in the Domesday Book.
Over the following Centuries Swindon grew in to a town. The town’s economy has changed over the centuries; from live stock markets, to stone quarrying, to Manufacturing, which is still a large part of modern Swindon’s economy.
Swindon, in the 19th Century, was growing at a fast rate. The source of this growth was the manufacturing of the steam trains for the Great Western Railway. The trains being built were from the blue print designed by the renowned engineer Brunel. This period shaped the town of today. A number of sundry services developed around the Great Western Railways needs. An example of this was a small village was purposely built for the workers; this area is known today as “The Railway Village”.
