TThe first record of Chippenham, Wiltshire can be found in the 11th Century Domesday Book where it was called “Cepen” Hamme. Perhaps this was a Norman miss-spelling. The original Saxon name for Chippenham was Cyppa-Hamme believed to mean Market – enclosed by water. There is little evidence of the Saxon origins of the past. However, the original Saxon church site is now occupied by St Andrews Church.
Chippenham has the unfortunate honour of being the place where the 1960’s singer Eddie Cochran died in a car accident whilst riding in a Taxi through the town. Eddie Cochran was Just 22 year old when the tragedy struck. A plaque can be found Rowden Hill commemorating the death of the singer.
Today, Chippenham is a modern town with a diverse economy. Chippenham particularly benefits from its geographical location, the road and rail infrastructures. Making Chippenham an ideal commuter town for people wishing to work in nearby affluent Bath, or even further afield such as London.
