General Removal Techniques New Horizons make the best use of carpet protectors and lengthy mats at entrance doorways no matter what the weather. This is done so any loose soil and moisture can be wiped off on entering the property. It is New Horizons health and safety policy not to allow mats to be placed on stairs or steps where the risk of tripping is apparent, nor remove steel toe capped shoes at any stage throughout the move. If you are moving to or from a remote location or to an unsettled building site with mud and cement or perhaps even wet tarmac then let New Horizons know as soon as possible. By giving this important information it gives New Horizons the opportunity to introduce their “Wet & Dry teams.” To offer maximum protection to your carpets, in these sorts of locations, New Horizons can supply, at an extra charge, subject to availability, a crew of four. Split into outdoor and indoor teams, two staff members will take your items from the removal vehicle outside and then pass to the two staff members situated at the front door inside and vice versa. This avoids the need of the outdoor team to walk dirt into the property. From New Horizons’ point of view, the “Wet & Dry teams” are the best solution for carpet protection. Mattresses and sofas, no matter what shape or size, are protected with a waterproof outside and blanket covering inside “bags.” This enables the crew to not only protect the material of the mattress or sofa but also to allow them to move the object in the best possible way without causing any damage. Other items of furniture can be protected using a method known as “Export Wrapping.” This is where the individual piece of furniture is wrapped in either a 5 ply paper blanket or in a laminated bubble blanket to a standard that is recognised for international shipping. This is available on request and will be subject to an extra charge. For items that are extremely valuable, extremely fragile, extremely old and with sentimental value, New Horizons can arrange to have a wooden case made to protect the item from damage whilst in transit/storage. This is because the wooden case will stop other items in the load from bearing weight directly onto the encased article. This is available on request and will be subject to an extra charge. All items of furniture that are to be transported onto the removal vehicle are packed tight together with “woollen removal blankets.” All items of furniture that contain glass will have the glass front tied into the wall of the removal vehicle to ensure nothing can fall forward onto the glass and cause a breakage. Heavy items are placed on the floor of the removal vehicle and then items are placed on top of the initial heavy item in descending weight and size order. Items such as televisions are often placed under tables to allow the table to act as a protecting cradle. Removal “ties” are then used to secure everything in place before transit. Small framed pictures are packed in small packing boxes wrapped in packing paper for protection. Large framed pictures are wrapped in double walled card to prevent corners and glass being damaged. Plaster guilt frames are wrapped with sympathetic materials that will not scratch the surface and then wrapped in double walled card. Canvas pictures tend to have a frame but no solid back to offer protection from puncturing; New Horizons will protect the back and front to eliminate the risk of a puncture. All New Horizons staff have been trained and certified as “Manual Handlers.”
